Internet and the effects on academic study In the advent of the Internet, studying and teaching seem to be easier, faster and more convenient. Nowadays, the lectures can be sent on the Internet, and students instead of coming to class, are able to study at home. While in the world, more and more curricula are based on the technology advances, the increase in the use of it in academic study can be traced to two reasons: the explosion of Internet and the globalization of education The first cause of the rise in Internet usage in formal study is the boom of computers with Internet access, which has been shortening any distance. Consequently, instead of commuting to the class to give lectures, teachers can put all the documents on a website and students are able to download them to study at home. Furthermore, in some few decades, the Internet has turned printed documents, audio and video data to streams of information that can be viewed, read, listened and edited anywhere. As a result, no longer do learners have to go to the library to read books and find information; they are able to enrich their knowledge by searching on the Internet. Another reason is the development of distant education, resulting in the urge in the Internet usage. Nowadays, it is allowed students to follow the curricula of a foreign university in their own nation. For example, a Vietnamese student can graduate and receive the certificate from a college in Denmark without going to this country. Hence, the Internet plays a vital role in connecting between foreign students and the main university. The ease and availability of information located on the Internet have brought about both positive and negative impacts on students ‘academic achievement. In one hand, because most documents are available and accessible on the Internet, finding information is no longer a burden for students to do research or fulfill any assignment. As a result, students tend to get better marks for their task while less effort is spent. Moreover, learners seem to be more informative because they daily read news on the online newspapers or magazines. On the other hand, the bad impacts that the Internet abuse has caused to learner’s study are undeniable. First of all, because there is no need to go to the class, the importance of face to face meetings between students and lecturers has been reduced. As the matter of fact, the social interaction is impaired. Secondly, the ease of copying and editing information on the Internet has resulted in the increase of plagiarism. Most of students often search everything relating to their exercises and hand in them to their teachers without the acknowledgement of the author. Last but not least, the dependence of students on the Internet can make them unconsciously input wrong information. Therefore, it is very harmful if students are unable to differentiate adequately the trusting sources. In conclusion, using Internet in formal study has both advantages and disadvantages. Although it is claimed to affect the academic achievement in some aspects, studying programs based on the Internet usage tend to develop more in the world.
