Because of your simplistic understanding of the problem, allow me to summarize to you
the problems with Bamboo. Ask yourself how you would deal with the problems:
For a longest time, the forums were co-opted by so-called long time and active members, some of them friends
of admins and moderators. It became a
personalized plaything for small groups of people, acting with impunity. Participation was indisciplined,
and borderline irresponsible. If a "productive long-time" member wishes to misbehave, he/she does so without
regards for others.
Spams are viewed as a taels of gold, with deletions expecting advance notice, and disciplinary
actions preceded with multiple warnings.
Unfavorable administrative actions are reacted in the manner that you see on Jbox,
contentious, persistent, classless and unthinking, like 3-year-olds having their candies taken away.
Accusations about abuse of power and hidden agenda fly baselessly and callously. This, I am sure, you have seen
and known well.
What this means is that the community was completely marginalized. The demand of time on moderators was severe.
Instead of modifying their behavior, people play games with warnings. After a warning, they would stop for a while
and then start up the same behavior, if not later, then the next day.
Have you ever walked through the old pages from the perspective from someone who tries to learn and glean
something useful? 15Q and 150 A per page, 5-6 spams per page (more on Jbox at times), do your calculations.
The fun spams you posted are imposing an
unfair burden on those wishing to learn. Where's the fairness in that? Do you feel for them?
Or is it because they are invisible, they don't count? I wish you would think and see from the perspectives of the neediest.
Why should spams be notified in advance when removed? Is your time important? If so, is the additional
demand on the time of volunteers legitimate just
for the sake of your ego? Are your spams so fun, important, and beneficial that they trump the time of others,
trying to learn or to help the forum?
HOW WOULD YOU SOLVE IT?
Become a so-called respectul, admired and likeable moderator? Are you going to please everyone and
every factions? As far as I know, even God can't do that. You will imbue cognizance
and awareness to everyone by being deferential? They will conduct themselves impeccably because they
like you? When that happens, should the forum still be known as Bamboo or Shizuro forum?
The best moderator is and should be invisible and ideally unnecessary, not one that caters to be liked.
Niceness was what brought on the problems of Bamboo in the first place. It was unappreciated, abused and
became a part of the problem. With BBSupporter so-called meanness, niceness can now be appreciated and
doubly effective. Isn't that a hoot?
One more thing you may want to know: Conversation with you via BBSupporter profile will be eventually deleted.
This is to make room and to focus attention of visitors to the profile on the more important generic points of forum conduct and governance. When that happens, please don't erroneously conclude that it is to avoid publicizing this exchange.
In fact, I welcome and encourage you to distribute this conversation to whatever friends and groups you have and share with them the points made. Perhaps there is still some sanity out there.
