%%Ngô Quyền (897-944) was the hero initiating the independence for the Vietnamese people after more than 1,000 years of Chinese domination. After the Khuc family's failure, his former general Dương Diên Nghệ chased successfully the Nam Hán troops in 931 and Giao Châu restored its independence. Later, Dương Diên Nghệ was assassinated and his power was usurped by Kiều Công Tiễn. Ngô Quyền - Dương Diên Nghệ's son-in-law - advanced his troops from Ai Châu (Thanh Hoá) in order to kill Kiều Công Tiễn and to beat the Nam Hán troops to pieces on the Bạch Đằng river (in 938). After having ascended the throne, Ngô Quyền set up the royal capital in Cổ Loa.
