%%Born in Tân Bình (Gia Định), Nguyễn Đình Chiểu (1822-1888) - a patriotic poet of the Cochinchina - was very unlucky : After having graduated as junior bachelor, he absented himself from a higher examination to come home and attend his mother's funeral. On the way back home, the fond remembrance of his mother made him blind after a serious illness. In addition, he was repudiated by his wife. He still kept his feets by teaching and practising medicine. After the French aggresssion, Nguyễn Đình Chiểu used literature as anti-aggression weapon and to sing the praise of the insurgent troops. He highlighted unshakeable loyalty, dutifulness, piety, chastity and patriotism. His outstanding works were Lục Vân Tiên, Ngư Tiều Y Thuật Vấn Đáp, Văn Tế Nghĩa Sĩ Cần Giụôc. In Lục Vân Tiên (a 2082-sentence poetic story in nôm language), Lục Vân Tiên was a student who, on the way to take an examination, attacked the bandits to save Kiều Nguyệt Nga. Later, he absented himself from the examination when hearing of her mother's death, then became blind and was betrayed by his wife and his friends. After several years of hardships, Vân Tiên and Nguyệt Nga reunited each other. This work highlighted unshakeable loyalty, dutifulness, piety and chastity. The poetic art was covered with popular and Cochinchinese qualities.
