%%Nguyễn Trung Trực (?-1868) was an insurgent leader in Cochinchina. This farmer and fisherman had his native village in Nghề hamlet, Bình Đức commune, Tân An (present-day Long An). He commanded his troops to burn the French warship on the Nhật Tảo river and kill 37 French soldiers (1861). Nguyễn Trung Trực was entrusted with defending Hà Tiên, and after three western provinces had fallen to the French, he was proclaimed commander and transferred to Phú Yên. However, he stayed to command the resistance. On June 16th 1868, Nguyễn Trung Trực took the Kiên Giang post, mastered the Rạch Giá provincial capital for 6 days and killed the French chief of province. In September 1868, captured in Phú Quốc, he made up his mind not to surrender and was executed on October 27th 1868. Before his death, he declared : "Whenever there is still grass in Vietnam, there are still the anti-French Vietnamese".
