%%Quang Trung (Nguyễn Huệ, 1753-1792) - founder of Nhà Tây Sơn - was a military genius, an eminent politician and a clear-sighted diplomat. Belonging to the Hồ family, his ancestors had been obliged to come to Đàng Trong (i.e. towards the South) to reclaim waste land and settled in Tây Sơn (Bình Định). Nguyễn Huệ (future Quang Trung) was incomparably talented. The three brothers (Nguyễn Nhạc, Nguyễn Lữ, Nguyễn Huệ) rose up in arms to upset the power-usurping courtier Trương Phúc Loan, then overthrew Trịnh and Nguyễn Lords. Nguyễn Huệ beat 50,000 Siam aggressors to pieces in 1785 and ascended the throne in 1788. In 1789, Emperor Quang Trung trounced 290,000 Manchurian invaders. This resulted in national reunification after 200 years of conflict between the North and South dynasties. It was very wise of him to propose cease-fire to the Manchurian dynasty without harm to the national prestige. Emperor Quang Trung won the people's hearts, expanded the agriculture, the commerce and the national culture (in nôm language).
